Renewable energy equipment is entering the used market in volume

The first generation of utility-scale renewables is now old enough to be repowered, and that is putting serious electrical equipment into circulation.

Repowering is now routine

Solar sites built in the early 2010s are replacing inverters and sometimes reconfiguring collection as module technology and economics have shifted. Wind sites are replacing turbines, pad-mount transformers and collector equipment. In both cases the displaced electrical infrastructure is often only partway through its service life.

That is a young secondary market and pricing is still finding its level, which cuts both ways for a seller. Getting more than one informed opinion is worth the time here more than in mature categories.

What has real resale value

Pad-mounted and station transformers from collector systems, medium-voltage switchgear and reclosers, collector substation equipment, and large volumes of medium-voltage collection cable. Transformers are the standout: they are conventional equipment with a broad buyer pool well beyond renewables.

Central inverters are more difficult. They are proprietary, software-dependent and support-limited, so value depends heavily on whether the manufacturer still supports the platform. String inverters have a modest market at low unit values.

Collection cable is a large line item

A utility-scale solar site contains an enormous quantity of medium-voltage collection cable and DC harness. On repowering or decommissioning, recovery is a substantial project in its own right, complicated by the fact that much of it is direct-buried.

The economics turn on excavation cost against copper or aluminum content. Get the conductor sizes and material confirmed before anyone commits to a number, because aluminum collection cable changes the arithmetic considerably.

Decommissioning obligations

Many renewable sites carry contractual or permit-based decommissioning requirements with specific restoration standards and sometimes bonded funding. Equipment resale value offsets those costs directly.

If you are managing a site with a decommissioning obligation, an equipment valuation early in planning materially improves the budget picture — and in some cases the recovery value covers a meaningful share of the restoration work.
